Admission requirements for Aspiring Teacher Alternative Certification programs

There are admission requirements specific to the elementary and secondary education Aspiring Teacher Alternative Certification programs.

Elementary Education

Applicants to the Aspiring Teacher Alternative Certification program in elementary education must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • One of the following:
    • an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, both overall and in the major, or
    • an earned graduate degree in an education-related field
  • Passing scores on the CORE Academic Skills Assessment (CASA) exam. (Pedagogy and content area assessments will be taken toward the end of the program.)

It is strongly recommended that students complete some undergraduate pre-education courses prior to beginning the program.

Applicants who have worked in elementary schools for five years or more as either aides or substitutes may be admitted with a GPA falling between 2.5 and 3.0. Eligibility is determined by the coordinator of the Aspiring Teacher Alternative Certification programs.

Secondary Education

Applicants to the Aspiring Teacher Alternative Certification program in secondary education must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a major in the field in which the applicant seeks licensure
  • One of the following:
    • an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, both overall and in the major (math and science majors may be considered with a minimum GPA of 2.8), or
    • an earned graduate degree in the field in which the applicant seeks licensure
  • Passing scores on the CORE Academic Skills Assessment (CASA) exam (or a qualifying alternative assessment) and the content area assessment. The content area assessment must be taken by May 1. (The pedagogy assessment will be taken toward the end of the program.)
  • Remediation of any content deficiencies identified in the content standards review. Students must complete coursework equal to an undergraduate major in the area in which they wish to teach. Courses must be completed with a grade of C or better, and an overall 3.0 GPA is required for all prerequisite coursework.
