Initial Practitioner Teaching License

Begin by fulfilling these requirements:

  • Graduate from the teacher education program and wait about 6 weeks until your degree is posted on your transcript. (If you are a Certification-only student, you need to wait until all the grades from your program have been posted to your transcript.)

  • Pass the Indiana Praxis Test(s) required for your license area.

  • Earn a CPR-Heimlich-AED Certification

  • Pass a Suicide Prevention Training Module

The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) provides technical assistance, training and events, as well as materials to increase the knowledge and expertise of suicide prevention practitioners and other professionals serving people at risk for suicide.

When you have met all the requirements, log on to the Indiana LVIS Portal and create an individual profile.  Be sure to indicate that IUPUI is the “recommending university”.  (See LVIS Applicant Manual for instructions.)  You also need to upload your:

  • CPR-Heimlich Maneuver-AED Certification

  • Documentation of the Suicide Prevention Training Module

Your license application will be routed to IUPUI Licensing Advisors who will check your coursework, program completion/degree; your passing test scores; and your CPR and Suicide Prevention certifications; as well as any other licensing requirements. Once all state requirements are met, our Licensing Advisors can recommend your license to the Indiana Department of Education. Your license will be dated the date you make payment for the application.

When your license is approved, you will receive email confirmation, along with your license number from the State of Indiana via LVIS.  You can print copies of your license whenever you need them.

You can request a letter from the School of Education which verifies “Pending Program Completion” or “Eligibility” to give to interviewers at Teacher Candidate Interview Day or to submit online to prospective employers.
