What to submit

There are several items you need to submit along with your application to the urban education studies doctoral program.

An online application is required for all applicants.

To select this program on the online application, go to the Application Information tab. In the Intended Program and Plan section, choose:
    •    What type of degree do you intend to pursue?: Doctoral/PhD
    •    Academic Program: Education PhD
    •    Academic Plan: Urban Education Studies PhD

Complete the online application now

Submit official college transcripts, in English, from every college or university you've attended since high school (even if for only one semester). The transcripts can be mailed to the following address:

-If your institution offers an electronic submission of official transcripts, please send the electronic copies to, Ky Shaw at kycshaw@iu.edu.

Note: It is not necessary to submit transcripts for previous coursework or degrees at any Indiana University campus. If you completed coursework from an Indiana University campus, please include a typed statement with your student ID number and the campus you attended.

Upload GRE scores on the Department Information page and Additional Uploads section of the online application.

GRE revised General Test scores, including the Analytical Writing portion, are required for all applicants to the program. If you have already taken the GRE, please make sure your scores are still valid. The GRE must have been taken within five years of the final date you applied to the program.

Upload curriculum vitae or resume on the Department Information page and Additional Uploads section of the online application.

Submit in your online application a current curriculum vitae or resume that includes dates of employment and descriptions of your current and previous positions. Please note your involvement in any professional and/or community organizations, as well as any awards, honors, publications, presentations, and continuing education.

*Curriculum vitae or resume should be written in English.

Submit three letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to your personal and intellectual traits. If possible, one letter should come from a faculty member who can comment on your graduate-level academic work (or undergraduate work, if necessary).

Please note: Letters of recommendation may not be submitted online.

Upload the Writing Sample on the Department Information page and Additional Uploads section of the online application.

Submit one writing sample in your online application (e.g., a published paper, technical report, final paper from a graduate course, etc.). Writing samples will be assessed on both quality and student fit. Consider submitting a sample that speaks to your research interests in urban education and showcases your best writing skills.

*The Writing sample should be written in English.

Personal Statement
Submit in your online application a 500–1,000 word personal statement that summarizes your immediate and long-term professional goals as they relate to your intent to pursue a doctorate in urban education studies. The statement should demonstrate the quality of your writing.

Statement of Values
Submit in your online application a 500–1,000 word statement about your core personal values, particularly in relation to education. The statement should demonstrate the quality of your writing.

Statement of Experience
Submit in your online application a 500–1,000 word statement of your experience in urban environments and with urban community service. If you do not have experience in urban settings, then explain why an urban-oriented doctoral program would be a good fit for you. The statement should demonstrate the quality of your writing.

*Submit the three statements as 1 file(.doc, .docx, or .pdf) through the Department Information page and under the “Personal Statement” section of the online application. Each statement should be labeled and written according to the above guidelines. All statements should be written in English.

If you are not a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or refugee, you will be considered an international applicant. The School of Education at IUPUI, will accept a TOEFL score of 79 for the Internet-based version exam; the TOEFL can not be over 2 years old. Please note: The English for Academic Purposes exam(EAP) is waived with a TOEFL score of 100.
