Adventure in The Big Apple

A Vacation through the Fine Arts

New York City! The Big Apple! The Performing Arts Capital of the World!

What better place to spend a one-week, culturally-enriching vacation, and all expenses paid! During your week you will visit museums, attend theatre performances on Broadway, hear music, see dancing and art, stay in a luxurious hotel, and eat some of the finest food the world has to offer!  Money is no object! You will be amazed at all of the culture available to you! What kinds of delights await you on your adventure? How can you make the most of every moment?

The Tasks

1. Your overall goal is to plan the vacation of your life in New York City. Your trip will last one week. You will leave home on Saturday morning and will arrive home on Sunday evening the following weekend. You will need to select dates that correspond with the plans you make. You will be driving. Money is no object! Plan the trip as if you have unlimited financial resources and could stay wherever you choose and do whatever you want to do. You will submit your assignment to your teacher in journal form, dated daily, as if you have already taken the trip. Pretend about how each event was and describe it in imaginary detail.

Example: “Today is Sunday, July 27, 1997 and I have arrived in New York. I am staying at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, which is fabulous. It has all the old charm I imagined it would. I arrived there just in time to eat dinner at McDonald's in Times Square. It was a little bit disappointing. One McDonald's is the same as the next. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!"

2. First, scan through the list of resources provided to familiarize yourself with which link offers the information you need.

3. Select a hotel in New York City. Do not be concerned too much about location. Since you have unlimited money, you can just leave your car parked in the hotel garage and take taxis (or limos!) wherever you go. Once you know the address of your hotel, get driving directions from your home to your hotel through MapQuest. Print the directions to include with your project.

4. Make a plan for your vacation. You will schedule some special event for each day, in addition to a dinner location. Your plan must include: one orchestra, ballet, or opera event; one museum event; and one theatre event. You can find performance schedules, hours of operation and other information about many cultural cites in New York on your Resource List. You may include any other types of activities in your plan. If you are looking for other types of events, feel free to use one of the Search Engines listed with your other Resources.
