QUANTUM FITNESS:

A WEBQUEST

Task:  You are now all Quantum Fitness Trainers on Planet Fitness.  Your goal is to make up a galactic fitness plan for your classmates to perform.  This plan should be designed by your whole group, using the resources that are listed here in this WebQuest.  Hopefully, when you are finished, your plan will be "out of this world."

Essential Thoughts:

As you travel through this excellent fitness adventure, keep in mind the following quantum thoughts...

1.  Are you making a challenging, but fun fitness plan?

2.  Are you incorporating all of the components of fitness?

3.  Should your plan have a beginning, intermediate, and/or advanced level?

4.  How will the participants keep track of their progress?

5.  How will the participants know when they are "fit?"  Or are they ever?

Here are your quantum exercise buddies:

Pluto Pam              Mercury Mike           Saturn Sally

They will keep on exercising as you plan out the objectives and goals, showing you how fun fitness can be.  They're really cool :>)

How to complete your plan - The process:

1.  First and foremost, keep a journal to track and record all of your galactic information.

2.  Jobs:  Each person in your group will need to have a job. Please discuss, choose and record who will take on the following positions: facilitator, timekeeper, checker, and inquirer.  You will all be recorders.  The facilitator is obviously the "task-master," making sure that the group is browsing through the resources needed for this quantum fitness plan.  The facilitator will meet with the teacher daily to discuss the following:  where are you now?  Where do you need to go?  How will you get there?

3.  Logistics of the project:

     a. Design the fitness plan for a specific type of person.  State this in your plan (ie: is this plan for a person who is:  slightly over weight, underweight, in need of muscle toning, very overweight, totally exercise deficient, or an exercise maniac, etc. ?)

     b. Make short-term and long-term goals for the participant, plus suggestions for a maintenance plan.

     c. Conduct the research, using the Internet Links below.  You will need to use all of the components of fitness in your plan, including the use of target heart rate exercise, proper nutrition, and stress reduction techniques.

     d. Design a written plan, and an oral/active presentation, using visual aids and props.  In fact...you will lead the class through a series of the exercises that you are suggesting in your plan.  You will have one class period dedicated to your awesome, quantum presentation.  A list of appropriate equipment needs will need to be submitted to your teacher the day before the presentation (ie: 15 jumpropes), after your presentation has been approved.

     e. A four week plan should be made, with the participant being active five days a week, for 30 minutes (or more) each day.  This workout is something specific they will do besides their normal day activities.  For example, you may not say that they are on a soccer team for a month, therefore they will be at soccer practice everyday for four weeks.  This quantum fitness plan is above and beyond that.  Plus, shooting hoops on a driveway for a half an hour doesn't count either.  This should be a vigorous workout, starting somewhat easily, and getting more challenging during the month.

     f. A brief menu plan should show the nutritional needs of the participant. For example, if they are overweight, the foods should be low-fat, etc.

4. You will have two-weeks to complete this plan.  At that time, your teacher will collect your plan and journal.  When approved, the teacher will give you a Quantum Fitness Performance Date.  You will need to be prepared for this.  But remember...if YOU hate to do the exercises that you are showing, your middle school peers will probably hate them as well.  Make it fun, user-friendly, challenging, and somewhat sweaty.

5.  When we are finished with the unit, we will make the healthy snacks listed on the resource list, and have a healthy quantum celebration.  If you find others, please keep them handy.

6.  You will also need to do a reflection on your plan.  See the questions at the end of this WebQuest.
