A career exploration webquest designed

for middle school students.

Introduction

At the middle school level, students begin researching careers.  "The Perfect Career" will help students begin their career information search.  Each group will consist of 5 students.  Each student will be given two careers to explore and present information gathered with their team members.

Task

You and your team members are working as a team to determine "The Perfect Career."

  • select a career area
  • search offline and online resources for career information 
  • complete career information sheet (handout)
  • as a group, discuss and decide which would be "The Perfect Career" 
  • create a PowerPoint presentation about your careers and the group's choice career 
  • oral presentation about your careers to the class in the form of a PowerPoint Presentation 
  • find and schedule a person in the group's "Perfect Career" to speak to the students on Career Day

You will be using the Internet for research, Microsoft Word to prepare your paper, and PowerPoint to create your oral presentation and slide show for the class.

Process

Are you ready to learn about your new career? To successfully complete "The Perfect Career," you must complete the following process. 

  1. Students will be assigned in groups of 5
  2. Students will need to choose their career area.  The choices are:

  1. Submit a list to your teacher with your groups' names and career areas for each student. 
  2. Each student will research 2 careers within their career area.
  3. Click on Helpful Websites to begin researching your careers.
  4. Complete the Career Handout Sheet.
  5. Once everyone in the group is finished researching career information, discuss and decide which career would be "The Perfect Career" as a group.
  6. As a group create a PowerPoint Presentation on your career areas and your chosen "Perfect Career."  Your group will have approximately 1 slide per career with additional slides for your names and "The Perfect Career" decision.  Look at the evaluation rubric.
  7. Arrange with your teacher to present your PowerPoint Presentation to the class. Liven it up as much as possible with any pictures, graphs, sound and charts as you can that are relevant to your presentation.
  8. Each student will write a one page summary including:  what careers he/she researched, what he/she thought was interesting/peculiar, how the group worked together as a whole, and how his/her group reached "The Perfect Career." This paper will be typed (double spaced) with a readable font in 12 pica.

Conclusion

After organizing and sharing information, students as a group will present to the class their PowerPoint presentation of their "Perfect Career."  In addition, each student will write a one page summary including:  what careers he/she researched, what he/she thought was interesting/peculiar, how the group worked together as a whole, and how his/her group reached "The Perfect Career."
