Praxis II - Specialty Area Tests

Undergraduate and Post-Baccalaureate Certification students are required to pass the Praxis II exam, which covers knowledge of their major subject area, for licensing.  This exam is taken during the last year of your program and you will be advised to take it by the faculty at the block orientation meetings.  Dual licensing programs which add an area to the original license can be obtained without an additional test. Special notes for specialty area tests are indicated below:

  1. An applicant for an initial teaching license must achieve the minimal acceptable score(s) for the examination(s) required at the time she/he completes the teacher preparation program. However, an applicant must take any examination or test that has been added after the applicant completes the preparation program if the applicant delays applying.

  2. Under Indiana Licensing Rules 2002, SCIENCE majors must take at least two specialty tests. For instance, the Physical Science License under Rules 2002 requires both Chemistry (0245) and Physics (0265). SECONDARY SCIENCE Transition to Teaching licensure may require Praxis II scores in one subject area. Please check with Licensing Advisor.

  3. Under Indiana Licensing Rules 2002, SOCIAL STUDIES majors will take Praxis test #10081, Social Studies Content Knowledge. This test covers all social studies areas.
  4. ELEMENTARY EDUCATION majors must take the specialty area test in Elementary Education and the Reading Specialist test.
  5. For dual license program completion of special education, you do not need to take the praxis II exam for special education if you submit two applications at the time of licensure.  Original and Addition—and one payment of $70, cashier’s check or money order, payable to the State of Indiana.
  6. For dual license completion of Computer Technology, ENL, and Reading, submit one original application license with one $35 cashier’s check or money order payable to the State of Indiana. There are no Praxis II specialty tests in these areas at this time.
  7. For PE majors with dual license completion in Health, there is a Health Praxis II test #20550, to include on the original application, or submit two applications with Health as an addition and the $70 cashier’s check or money order payable to the State of Indiana.
