PPST-PRAXIS I INFORMATION
WHAT IS THE PRE-PROFESSIONAL SKILLS TEST (PPST PRAXIS I)?
PRAXIS I: Academic Skills Assessments includes the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) and the Praxis I Computer-Based Test (CBT), both of which measure basic proficiency in reading, mathematics and writing.

Students seeking admission to the Teacher Education program at IUPUI must successfully complete all three parts of the PPST.

WHAT ARE THE PASSING SCORES FOR THE IUPUI TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM?

CAN I USE MY PPST SCORES FOR LICENSURE?
Yes. In addition to successfully completing all portions of the PPST, you will be required to take a specialty area test(s) that corresponds with your major area(s). Additional information is available in the School of Education commons located on the third floor of the ES (Education/Social Work) building or see a member of the School of Education Student Services staff.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THE TEST?
You can register for the pen and paper exam at www.ets.org by clicking on Praxis and Register for a Test. The test is also available on computer at Prometric Testing Centers throughout Indiana. You can call either of the below testing centers to schedule an appointment or go to www.ets.org and click on Praxis and then Test Centers and Dates to find testing centers outside of Indianapolis

If you are currently attending IUPUI, it is imperative that you have your scores sent to IUPUI. The Attending Institution/Recipient Code is RA1325.

IS A FEE WAIVER AVAILABLE?
Students who meet certain income guidelines may be eligible for a waiver of the registration fees. The waiver form can be found in the Praxis Bulletin by going to www.ets.org and clicking on Praxis and Get Bulletin.

ARE ACCOMODATIONS AVAILABLE?
Students who are non-native speakers of English, or have learning disabilities, or have physical disabilities may take the exam with accommodations. You must apply for accommodations 4-12 weeks before you plan on taking the exam. The paperwork for accommodations can be found by going to www.ets.org and clicking on Praxis then Register for a Test then looking at Important Notes.

The School of Education also offers free PPST tutoring sessions four times
a semester to students who are preparing to take the tests. To get the schedule
for these sessions, visit the Curriculum Resource Center, ES1125 or call 274-6867.
Many students find that these tutoring sessions help them to be successful the
first time they take the tests.

WHAT IF I FAIL THE TEST?
Students can take the test as many times as they wish. Once they have passed a part of the test, they do not have to take it again. However, students must pass all three parts of the test to meet the Teacher Education program application criteria. Students will not be permitted to take professional education courses until the PPST has been successfully completed. If you fail any portion of the PPST, you must wait 30 days before you retake the test(s).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND RESOURCES
To prepare for the PPST there are a variety of resources available at IUPUI which students may use to practice and/or refresh their basic skills in reading, math and writing. Listed below are centers and references that provide review and practice materials, with a brief description of the materials available:
Plato Learning
This on-line simulated test from PLATO Learning and ETS Technologies includes a simulation of the PPST® test (Pre Professional Skills Test). It gives students an experience closely related to the actual test and provides for skill building in reading, writing, and math. IUPUI students can sign up for a free Plato Learning account at this site http://education.iupui.edu/soe/testing/praxis/index.aspx. Information will be sent to you via your IUPUI e-mail after your request. If you are not an IUPUI student but are going to apply for the IUPUI Teacher Education program, you can pay $50 for unlimited access by contacting SOEWebmaster at soeweb@iupui.edu for access.

Free Praxis Tutoring Workshops
Free praxis tutoring workshops are held once per month on Saturday mornings at the Curriculum Resource Center. Call 317-274-6867 or email crc1125@iupui.edu for upcoming dates and times and to reserve a seat. Students from any campus are welcome at these tutoring sessions.

The CRC has textbooks and materials available for review of theme-writing, reading comprehension, and math. The CRC also has a copy of the Cliff’s TestPrep for Praxis I: PPST and the Barron’s Study Guide for Praxis I. Both include complete copies of the PPST, along with sample questions and answers. Additional copies of the PPST guides are available at most bookstores and public libraries and can be found online at Amazon.com or Half.com as used texts.

The Writing Center offers one on one tutoring in addition to a variety of workshops during the year that deal with preparation for essay exams. Topics include how to approach a question, spelling, grammar, use of examples, and documentation.
