4. Declared interest in a community project
The community project should be described in the personal statement
section of the online application.
- Follow the online application directions for items to include
in the first part of the personal statement.
- Create a second section for the personal statement and label
it: Declared interest in a community-based project. The applicant’s
proposed project description will form the basis for her/his
Independent Study, T590. It also will guide assignment of the
faculty advisor who will be serving as the student’s mentor
for T590.
- Items to include in the proposed community project description
(second part of personal statement):
- type of project
- purpose
- goals and objectives
- expected outcomes
- participating community agencies (if any)
- a general statement about how the project will benefit
the applicant’s professional development.
Note: 3 a-f is a projected plan only and provides the review
team with details about the applicant’s interests, hopes
and goals. T590 is designed to build on those descriptions.
Community-based Project Samples
The following is a list of examples demonstrating the scope and
range of possibilities in a community-based project. The list should
be considered as just that, an example of the many possibilities,
and should not be interpreted as an expected direction for a project.
- Development of a partnership between a school and a community-based
organization aimed at securing financial and material resources
for a school-community initiative.
- Implementation of a feasibility study designed to assess the
need for bilingual pre-school services at a neighborhood school
serving immigrants.
- Development of a parent education program aimed at increasing
participation of recent
immigrants in school-community programs.
- Evaluation of the impact of a school-based health clinic on
academic performance of
children.
- An action research project aimed at understanding school-community
dynamics in a
local neighborhood.
- A focused ethnography of social work practice at the middle
school level.
- Implementation of a service-learning program through the mobilization
of local resources
and neighborhood groups.
