Certification Areas
Individuals who have a teaching license or who are in a teacher education program can add an additional content area to their license by successfully completing a dual license. The Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI offers dual license programs in four content areas:
These programs prepare teachers to meet the standards established by the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) for teaching in these areas of content, but do not specifically develop a teacher's performance beyond their existing developmental area. For this reason, a dual license adds only a content area to a teacher's license. It does not add or change the developmental level(s) of the license.* *The only exception to this is Health, which can be added only at the Early Adolescent and Adolescent/Young Adult Developmental Levels, and Exceptional Needs for teachers with All Grade licenses, which can also only be added at the Early Adolescent and Adolescent/Young Adult Developmental Levels. For more information about teacher licensing, visit the website of the Indiana Professional Standards Board. http://www.doe.in.gov/dps/ All the dual licenses require a 6 credit hour practicum if done outside the teacher education program. If done as part of the Teacher Education program, students do 8-weeks regular student teaching and 8-weeks (divided 4 credit hours regular student teaching and 4 credit hours practicum) in a specialized placement specific to the license.
