IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT LICENSING
Criminal History
The requirement that teacher license applicants submit a Limited Criminal History as a condition of any licensing action in the state of Indiana is repealed as of July 1, 2009. After July 1st all new hires and possibly current employees in school corporations, charter schools, and accredited nonpublic schools will be subject to an expanded criminal history check. Contact your school corporation for more information. The online licensing system still contains a criminal history section for each applicant to self disclose.

- IUPUI can process your license renewal application only if you have completed 3 semester hours at this campus.
- You must obtain and submit to the School of Education official transcripts for any credit hours (for renewals or additions) completed at other universities.
- If you are renewing your license AND adding areas, you will complete ONLY ONE APPLICATION ON THE STATE TOLS SITE. One application can handle more than one action.
- For Original licenses, you must comply with state-mandated CPR/Heimlich Maneuver certification by submitting proof of current certification to SOE license advisor. Contact us for information. CPR - Heimlich Maneuver Certification. Get state information here: STATE CPR CERTIFICATION INFORMATION
- Upon review of your online application you will be contacted by the appropriate license advisor if additional information or documentation is needed.
- When your online application is correct and complete, IUPUI license advisors will make a recommendation to the state for your license to be issued.
- If you need a receipt that your license has been recommended, you may request a Letter of Eligibility. You may download the request form here LETTER OF ELIGIBILITY and submit it to the School of Education along with other materials.
Program Completion:
- If you are a degree candidate, you can begin the application process once you have graduated and your degree is posted
- one or more weeks after grades are posted.
- If you are a certification-only student, you can begin the application process once you have completed your required classes.
Testing and Praxis Information:
The state of Indiana requires all candidates for a teaching license to pass and report all testing requirements prior to applying for a license. This includes the PPST (Praxis I) and a Specialty Area Test (Praxis II) in the teaching major. Elementary Education students must also pass the Elementary Reading Specialist Test (10300).
IMPORTANT!: Registration materials must be received in the Education Testing Services (ETS) office by the due date. See the ETS registration materials for more information or access the ETS website.

Applying for an Initial (original) School Administrative License:
You will need to submit to Licensing Advisor at IUPUI School of Education:
- Letter from School Corporation or Human Resources Department on official letterhead stationery verifying completion of two years of teaching experience
- A copy of a valid teaching license
- SLLA test scores. Get testing information here: SLLA INFORMATION
Applying for an Initial (original) School Services License – School Counselor, School Nurse, School Social Worker
You will need to submit to Licensing Advisor at IUPUI School of Education:
- School Nurse – a valid RN license through the Indiana State Board of Nursing
- School Social Worker – a valid Licensed Social Worker license (LSW) through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (IPLA)
Applications for Addition to Teaching License:
It is important that you have consulted with a School of Education Academic Advisor and submit a copy of a signed Advisor Coursework Checklist to Licensing Advisor at IUPUI School of Education.
If you are applying for an addition to your license at the same time you apply for your original license, dual licensure, apply online for original license area first, log out, then log in again and apply for the addition. The state will process your original and mail it to you and then will process the addition to your license and issue you a new license with both the original and addition areas on it. The second license will be mailed within approximately 48 hours of the first license. Then destroy the first license you received with only the original area on it.
Applications for License Renewal – All Licenses Except Rules 2002:
Standard instructional licenses can be renewed no earlier than 60 days before the expiration of the current license. IUPUI can recommend your renewal only if you completed at least three semester hours toward renewal at this campus.
There is no need to submit IUPUI or IU Bloomington transcripts. If any of the coursework was completed at another institution, please submit original transcripts to Licensing Advisor at IUPUI School of Education.

What do I need to renew my license?
College Credit
- You need six credit hours of graduate coursework in the past five years.
- Graduate-level courses in your specialty area or in Education.
- If your course is not covered above, call the School of Education at (317) 274-6868.
- The courses you use must be taken since you last activated your license.
Continuing Renewal Units (CRU’s)
- These are different from college credit.
- If you take any amount of CRU’s for renewal, you must contact the Indiana Professional Standards Board.

Applications for Conversion to Professional:
For Professionalizing an Indiana Teaching License Issued under Basis of Bulletin 192, Bulletin 400 or Rules 46-47:
In order to be eligible for the Professional ten-year license, you must hold a Master’s degree from IUPUI, have a minimum of five years teaching experience in an accredited school, and have completed the specified additional coursework in your license area or areas. You will need to submit to Licensing Advisor, IUPUI School of Education, a letter from School Corporation or Human Resource Department on official letterhead/stationery verifying completion of five years of teaching experience.
What is a professional license?
- Your license would list “professional” instead of “standard”.
- Your license would be valid for one initial ten-year time period.
- Your license would then revert back to a five-year license.
- You would have to professionalize any area(s) you might add to your license later.
How do I get a professional license?
The state has three criteria:
- You have to have an appropriate Master’s degree.
- You have to have five years of appropriate experience in an accredited school since you received your license.
- You must have specific graduate-level coursework taken since you obtained your license and as determined by the state for each area on your license.
- You must call (317) 274-6868 for further information.
Emergency Permit Renewal:
If you hold a standard, professional, or provisional teaching license, this does not apply to you.
If you hold a Limited License:
- Call the School of Education at (317) 274-6801 if you have not taken your classes. Ask to be connected to the Graduate Advisor.
- Call your school corporation to initiate the paperwork if you have completed your courses.
- Check IPSB website for changes in rules for emergency permits http://www.doe.in.gov/dps/licensing/limited/
If you hold a Reciprocal License:
- Call the Indiana Professional Standards Board at (317) 232-9010.
- Call the School of Education at (317) 274-6801 to initiate application process to complete the deficiencies.
