About us

Welcome to the Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI. Our mission is to prepare professionals for a variety of rewarding careers in teaching, school leadership and counseling. We are located in the downtown area on the dynamic IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis) campus. This location provides easy access to a host of IU and Purdue programs, as well as to numerous metropolitan area museums, parks and schools. In response to our urban location, our programs have a uniquely multicultural focus and are closely connected to urban public schools and community groups in the local area. Our programs involve inquiry-based and applied research in urban schools and communities. Our multicultural focus also has led to several international initiatives. A program featuring study in Mexico is currently available and projects involving study in China and Africa are being planned.

The School of Education offers undergraduate and master’s degrees in elementary and secondary education as well as programs for certification, dual licensing and master’s degrees in special education, English as a second language, reading, and computers in education. Students who already have an undergraduate degree may be eligible for our Transition to Teaching or post-baccalaureate certification programs. Our Educational Leadership program provides preparation for future administrators at both the master’s and doctoral level. We also offer a master’s program in school counseling. Our newest master’s degree program focuses on urban education. Students who complete our Certificate in Community Building may be eligible to move courses for that initiative into the urban master’s program. Additionally, a multidisciplinary doctoral program in urban educational studies is currently in development.

School of Education faculty members believe that future education professionals should have many opportunities to practice in the classroom what they are learning in their college courses. Therefore, our programs have been structured with a strong field component and a focus on quality interaction with experienced teachers, counselors and K-12 students. Many of our classes meet on-site at professional development schools where our students (known as interns) are quickly brought into the culture and rhythm of daily school life. In short, these are “real world” programs that respond to the needs of urban schools.

All of our programs are fully accredited. “Learning to Teach/Teaching to Learn” is the name of our undergraduate program; it is accredited by both the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Named as one of three distinguished programs by the Association for Teacher Educators in 1997, this program also won a best practice award in support of diversity from the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education in February, 2006.

School of Education faculty and students are involved in many exciting research projects. Within the school, the Center for Urban and Multicultural Education (CUME) serves as a resource for students, faculty members and community groups that choose to engage in collaborative research on issues related to urban education. The El Puente project, for example, involves collaboration between a community group (La Plaza, the Hispanic Education Center) and CUME to pursue the goal of preparing Hispanic youth in two urban high schools for post secondary education. El Puente provides support and incentives for students to stay in school and prepare for further education in colleges, universities, or technical schools.

The School of Education serves area teachers by offering a variety of professional development opportunities. Teachers can fulfill requirements for license renewal by entering a master’s program or by participating in our Summer in the City program. Teachers can take a voyage on the internet, preview museum exhibits for curriculum ideas, or take a fresh look at managing their classrooms. Each summer hundreds of educators come to IUPUI for master’s classes, license renewal courses, or to add new areas of certification to their teaching licenses. Some come just to broaden their knowledge of current issues in education.

Our Office of Professional Development works directly with school districts to design master’s programs that meet in the district instead of at IUPUI. This allows teachers to take classes without driving downtown at the end of the day. The Director of Professional Development serves as a liaison between a district (or an interested group of teachers within a district) and the School of Education. We currently have nine master’s cohorts operating off-campus in various locations in the metropolitan area.

The IU School of Education at Indianapolis is unique, rich in culture, diversity, technology, and dedicated to offering a variety of quality programs for pre-service and in-service education professionals.
