Profile

My research and teaching focus on preparing urban K12 teachers to work with English Language Learners (ELLs).  Under this umbrella, I publish on innovative program development, urban ESL teacher preparation, and target-based instructional coaching.  Both sociocultural and critical perspectives inform my mixed methods research.  I have been awarded four U.S. Department of Education grants focused on teacher quality.  My current federal funding supports an ESL partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools and the Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Pike Township. I am using instructional coaching to create a cadre of district level coaches and  teachers prepared to  showcase best practices for English Language Learners. IUPUI has created ESL demonstration classrooms in five elementary schools and two high schools from 2007 to the present.  Teachers from IPS, MSD of Pike and Wayne Townships, and Avon Community Schools have also participated in IUPUIs new ESL distance education program. I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in such topics as inclusive learning communities, second language literacy, assessment, sociocultural pedagogy, and research design.
